Although the numerical simulation of flow problems began in the sixties using finite difference orpanel methods, it wasn´t until the early seventies that the Finite Element Method (FEM) entered the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Since then, a lot of progress has been made, both in the understanding of the difficulties lying on the application of the general finite element ideas and in the development of numerical strategies to overcome them.
