This book is the published report of the seven Round Tables held as a part of the scientific programme of the Third European Congress of Mathematics (Barcelona, July 10th to 14th, 2000).
It contains the texts delivered by moderators and panelists, together with carefully edited transcriptions of the debates.European Congresses (previously held in Paris in 1992 and in Budapest in 1996) intend to disseminate knowledge, stimulate new developments and foster cooperation among mathematicians. One of their basic features is that they also aim to be a forum for debate on topics of general interest to the mathematical community. Round Tables are addressed to the society at large through the overall influence of mathematics in everyday life.
